Yemen’s Famine Enters Its Second Year

Yemen's Food Crisis: Since 2014, Houthi rebels and the opposing Saudi coalition have used food as a weapon of war. In Yemen, subsequent control over resources has lead to one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Doctor Aida Al Sadeeq sees "30-40 malnourished children per month, severely acutely malnourished". Historically, Yemenis have relied on imports for 90% of their food. Today, the coalition monitors resources entering Yemen, diverting some ships to the already tightly packed port of Aden. "Some of the ships, they are waiting for 20 days", says Marwan Al Bakshi, who watches over the ships that are waiting for permission from the coalition to dock. Some boats are carrying crucial supplies from the World Food Program, which could save lives. Reporter Marcia Briggs identifies that severe acute malnutrition is "a concept so commonplace in Yemen that it’s known by its acronym. SAM." Australia’s Battle To Drill For Oil On Timor Island

The Timor Gap (2004): The dispute over who owns the oil and gas reserves under the East Timorese sea is becoming increasingly bitter. With billions of dollars of revenue at stake, neither side is prepared to back down. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures "We have oil, kerosene and gas in our sea that people want to steal. They are the resources that can help us fix everything," states East Timor's President Xanana Gusmao. But Australia is refusing to redraw maritime boundaries to enable Dili to exploit these natural resources. Instead, it wants to continue operating by the terms of a 1992 agreement which gave them the right to joint development areas and left borders undefined. Now many Timorese blame their own government for ever agreeing to these terms. "They are the ones who signed the agreement … why should we blame Australia?" states one opponent. And if Australia refuses to compromise, it may prove to be a mistake that's impossible to rectify. California: Ground Zero For The Water Wars?

California's Water Wars: After 5 years of drought, California has finally had a deluge of rain. But with much of the state’s water supply being sent to LA, people in drought-affected areas feel they’ve been left high and dry. Dean Cornish and Ronan Sharkey report for SBS Dateline. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures For similar stories, see: California's Immigration Showdown
https://youtu.be/1d9ql-N0J4k "When it comes to water a lot of people call us a colony of LA, because the city of LA owns a big portion of the land here in the Owens Valley", says local Kathy Bancroft. She lives three hours north of Los Angeles at the source of California's water wars. Where there was once a great lake there is only grey dust, thanks to the 100-year-old, 300 km long aqueduct diverting water to LA. It's now become the biggest source of dust pollution in the entire US. "They just do whatever they like with our water and the land", says Bancroft. The burial grounds of many of her Paiute and Shoshone descendants have blown away in the arid winds. Now LA has to pay $1.5 billion for sprinklers that pump 80 billion litres of water to control the Owens Valley dust problem. Families on the other side of the Sierra Nevada mountain live in third world conditions, rationing bottled water delivered by the truckload. "Now I just go out and a lot of times I cry", says 96-year-old local Vicky, whose precious garden finally succumbed to the drought. As the world's sixth largest economy struggles to manage its water, by 2025 it is estimated two-thirds of the world's population will face water scarcity. Love In The Factories: Cambodia’s Underground LGBT Community

Love In The Factories: LGBT individuals are not tolerated in Cambodia, where gay marriage is illegal. Pressured into conforming to heterosexual expectations, many LGBT women seek refuge by going to work in garment factories. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures 55,000 Cambodians are victims of forced marriage each year, while 50% believe that homosexuality is caused by karma from a past life. Sor Kanika, an LGBT woman from Phnom Penh whose sexuality was unacceptable to her parents, escaped to a local factory: "I had to leave home so I could have more freedom". Many Cambodian women find greater liberty in factories, but such safe spaces are not wholly free from predominant social expectations. Houn Sorphon fell in love with her girlfriend at work, but her parents separated them by forcing Houn to change jobs. "I was heartbroken", she recalls, reflecting on the injustice of most Cambodians' outlook: "love is all the same". Angola: America’s New Frontier (2005)

America's New Frontier: Revenue from Angola's oil reserves should be aiding the country's development. But instead, it's being used as a slush fund for government corruption. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Deep in Luanda's sewers, a group of boys show us around their home. "I'm desperate for help," begs one. "I'm eating rubbish, surrounded by others who are sniffing glue." According to the latest calculations, 9% of the country's GDP is siphoned off. Even the US ambassador admits that oil revenues are not going to "the Angolan people." Ordinary Angolans know they're being ripped off by their leaders. They're seething with resentment. In the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, this discontent has fuelled a separatist movement which has been fighting for years. With more and more Angolans asking awkward questions, there's a risk the country will collapse into anarchy again if the corruption problem isn't addressed. How Nigeria Became The New Frontline For Oil (2004)

A gang boss fighting for Ijaw self determination in the Niger Delta could threaten the world's energy balance and the existence of the Nigerian state. (2004) Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures The town of Tombia in the Niger Delta is little more than a burnt out shell. First the rival militias came, then the helicopter gunships. Now the town is deserted. At the root of the problem is oil. Locals complain that the Ijaw people, who form the Delta's largest ethnic group, are not given jobs in the oil industry. "If you have such wealth, your country is supposed to recognise that and give you special preferences. But that preference has not been given," complains former councillor Dokubo. Now Asari Dokubo is leading the fight for Ijaw self determination. He wants the Ijaw to reclaim their oil reserves and expel the foreign multinationals. Thousands of men have taken up arms to fight for him, forcing oil prices to top $50 per barrel. If the conflict spirals out of control, it could destroy Nigeria's unity and disrupt the global balance of oil. The Jarawa Tribe’s Awakening To The World

Endangered Jarawa: Looking at the modern-day plight of the descendants of India's first settlers For downloads and more information visit http://journeyman.tv/9609/short-films/endangered-jarawa.html The Jarawa were among the first people to migrate from Africa to Asia but their way of life is threatened by increased contact with the outside. Their future now depends on the decisions of the Indian government. Clutching bows and baring their teeth at the camera, the naked hunter gatherers of the Jarawa tribe stride purposefully towards the Indian settlers village. They are looking for iron items to form arrowheads. Policeman in plain clothes follow them — the farmers in the village are terrified. "The Jarawa used to kill people, they were hostile and often came to attack us. They have killed people and take away whatever they can get their hands on," says one local. India's government set up a reserve in 1957 for the Jarawas who are believed to be the descendants of the first people who migrated from Africa to Asia. But a major road, built in the 1970s, cut through the area and opened it up to traffic, hunting, and the timber industry. The contact to the new world has been fatal to the Jarawa. Increased levels of pollution and environmental damage drove some members of the tribe into neighbouring towns, prompting attempts in the 1990s to relocate them. The hospital at Kadamtala is full of Jarawa now suffering from conjuncitivitis, pneumonia and measles. The fate of the ancient Jarawa now lies in the hands of the Indian officials. Fortunately these are fictional countries, and the team are engaged not in real warfare but a complex cyber defence exercise. Merle Maigre, who heads the operation, explains its importance to the real world. “The most dangerous targets are in critical information infrastructure, our banking systems, our traffic control systems, our ports, airports.” Developed before the need for sophisticated cyber security, these systems are now vulnerable. ”It’s all about cooperation”, explains US Army Colonel Brian Vile. ”It’s all about information sharing. None of us is as smart as all of us.” For more information, visit https://www.journeyman.tv/film/7340 Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/journeymanpictures
